One of the reasons why The Lord of the Rings has that unique, unmistakable flavor of reality, is the sophistication and detail of cronolgia: every move of the first Fellowship of the Ring, and individual characters later, is in a precise date in sync with the others. Most fans will recall from memory the most important dates: September 22, birthday of Bilbo and Frodo, December 25 in the Fellowship leaves Rivendell, March 25 in which the Ring is destroyed.
JRR Tolkien, however, did not just invent stories, continents, peoples and languages: he also invented calendars which count the passage of time, different for each people. That is why, on those dates, there is often in discussions, debates, or at least, among the most Tolkien fans "fundamentalists": the birthday of Bilbo and Frodo falls on September 22, or 22 uccellaio (which is actually our September 13)?
on a date, however, Tolkien fans around the world agree, and all together (at least in spirit) to celebrate: today, January 3, birthday of JRR Tolkien. The way to celebrate is decent, but definitely hobbit: a toast, according to English custom. The instructions are simple: to make the Birthday Toast us stands up, stands a glass of the beverage of your choice (not necessarily alcoholic), and you say the words "the Professor" before drinking a sip. Then, sit back and enjoy the rest of your drink.
The Tolkien Society has also organized English a website on which you can "subscribe" to toast the birthday (in English: Birthday Toast).
We only leave a photo: Proudneck are the toast of Rome's Birthday 2010.
